All entering award-seeking students and concurrently-enrolled high school students must demonstrate mastery of basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. The placement process is designed to help students identify both their academic strengths and areas for improvement.
What tests can I take?
Placement may be determined by scores earned on the:
American College Test (ACT)
Computerized Placement Assessment and Support System (COMPASS)
Assessment of Skills for Successful Entry (ASSET)
Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)
Mid-South Community College (MSCC) recommends that all students complete a placement test. Students with placement test scores more than three years old may be required to retest. Students without placement scores should take the COMPASS test which is administered by appointment.
How can I schedule a COMPASS test?
To schedule a COMPASS test, please call the Admissions Office at 870-733-6728, email email@example.com, or visit the Learning Success Center, located in the Reynolds Center on the South Campus. Additional testing times, offered prior to registration periods each semester, are listed in the MSCC Schedule of Classes, which can be found on the MSCC home page, www.midsouthcc.edu.
How can I apply for testing accommodations?
Students who require disability accommodations for placement testing should provide appropriate documentation and notify the Associate Vice President for Student Life, located in the Office of Student Life, in the Reynolds Center on the South Campus, at least 10 business days prior to the test to ensure appropriate arrangements are made.
How much does the COMPASS cost?
A $10 testing fee is payable at the Cashier’s Window in the Reynolds Center prior to the testing time.
You must have a valid photo ID and a $10 receipt from the Cashier’s Window or a test fee waiver form, if applicable, to take the test.
Is there a study guide for the COMPASS?
To access sample questions and study guides for the COMPASS, please visit www.act.org/compass/sample/.
What do my scores mean?
For the latest placement chart information, including score ranges for the ACT, COMPASS, ASSET, and SAT, please visit the Admissions & Placement section of the MSCC Catalog, www.midsouthcc.edu/assets/files/downloads/Catalog/3_admissions_and_placement.pdf.
When test scores and other admissions documents indicate areas for improvement, students will be placed in the appropriate developmental courses. Students must complete these courses before enrolling in courses which satisfy degree or certificate requirements.
